Music Mondays is a project for teenagers aged 10-18 years with mild to moderate learning disabilities to access music and to help make new friends. Staffing support comprises a group leader, 4 supporting staff, a volunteer and a music technician. The majority of the staff team have music skills to share with the young people. All our staff are experienced in working with people with inclusive needs. So far the teenagers have had the opportunity to play instruments, learn DJ skills, write their own songs and also had the chance to sing their favourite songs. The group size is small (7-9 young people) to ensure the young people have sufficient input from each support worker to make the sessions fulfilling and beneficial.
We have access to a recording studio/computer suite, performance studio and an arts & crafts/singing room. Other equipment made available to us are electric guitars, (including Gibsons, Fender Stratocasters), a full sized drum kit, electronic drum kit, electronic keyboards, DJ decks, computers with garage band software, percussion instruments, mics and amps, as well as some percussion instruments to complement the resources. We also make use of the internet and are able to project song lyrics on a huge TV screen so we can run karaoke sessions. We are working in Partnership with Southway – South Leeds Youth Hub, who have enabled us to access these facilities at a very competitive rate.
